"...This is one of the best uses of the internet I've found."

To Candidates and their webmasters:

Consider linking to Smart Voter from your personal campaign website. Or you may want to tell others about the voter information you have put on your Smart Voter pages.

www.smartvoter.org/vote/jane_doe

Note: if the words near your link or reference contain the name "League of Women Voters", we only ask that you include this statement (in smallest type, if you wish) near the link or reference: "The League of Women Voters neither supports nor opposes candidates for public office or political parties."

Use our simple URL:

  • www.smartvoter.org/vote/firstname_lastname". If no other candidate in the current election on Smart Voter has your first and last name, this URL will go to your Smart Voter web page. The names used are those you used when filling out the candidate form. If you wish, you may include your middle initial or use your nickname: www.smartvoter.org/vote/firstname_middle_lastname" or www.smartvoter.org/vote/nickname_lastname". Some other variations are possible.

The name portion is not case sensitive, so you could say either www.smartvoter.org/vote/Jim_Smith or www.smartvoter.org/vote/jim_smith. "vote" must be lower-case. See the note about duplicate names below.

  • www.smartvoter.org/vote/lastname" This simplest form will find all web pages for candidates with your last name in the current election. If you have a unique last name, you might want to choose this form.

In the event of duplicate names, all candidates with the same specified name will be listed and the user can select the one desired. We cannot guarantee the URL will always go directly to a single candidate's web page. Candidate names are usually added to Smart Voter about two months before election day, but write-in candidates are added later. And there may be multiple active elections.

Try the URL and see what happens. If your candidate name is listed on our public site now and you don't yet have a Smart Voter page, your browser should take you to your name in the candidate list. Or you will see the duplicate names listed.

  • "www.smartvoter.org/yyyy/mm/dd/ss/cc/vote/lastname_firstinitial". Always find your web page -- even years from now. Go to your published Smart Voter web page, then copy the URL from your browser.

For example, the date might be "2006/11/07". ss = state code (ca or ny or oh), cc = 2 or 3 character county code (or "state") and lastname_firstinitial = the candidate's last name and initial of the first name without blanks. In the event of duplicate names, more than the first initial will be used.

If you have any questions about your URL, please contact your county coordinator or Smart Voter Central.
