Council Priorities

By Shelly Masur

How I think about my priorities
Redwood City is experiencing rapid growth and development and will be a fundamentally different place within five years. This brings with it opportunities and challenges, including the need for infrastructure development and community engagement. I am excited to bring my governance experience and a fresh perspective to the council as we work through all the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Our infrastructure needs are both physical and human. Areas that we must address are traffic, parking, and pedestrian and bike safety. We can work with other cities and the school district to explore options for public transportation. Redwood City must also consider the human infrastructure needed to keep our residents safe, especially adequate staffing for police and fire. We have fewer police now than we did in 2008 so must look at increasing staffing. And we must ensure our fire department is prepared both by providing the right equipment and through access to training.

Because of this growth, Council's most important job is reaching out to community members - new and long-term - to engage them in a conversation about the future of our city using both formal meetings and informal engagement strategies that include technology.

Finally, it is important to me that the City continues to be a welcoming place for kids and families. This means ensuring access to housing, high quality schools, and parks.
