Darrell Fong currently serves on the Sacramento City Council. As a councilman, he declined pay for over a year until city finances recovered from the recession. While serving on council, Darrell has become an independent voice balancing economic development with common sense policies to protect living wage jobs for working families. He is also a respected voice on regional water and flood control issues. As a member of the state Assembly, Darrell has pledged to decline per diem pay, event tickets from special interests, and invitations to go on government junkets. Darrell Fong was born and raised in Sacramento and has lived in the Pocket Greenhaven area for over 30 years. Darrell attended C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State University. Darrell attended the police academy at the Sacramento Regional Criminal Justice Training Center and started with the Sacramento Police Department as a patrol officer. Since then, he has worked his way up the ranks as a field training officer, detective, gang detective, patrol sergeant, narcotic/vice sergeant, Internal Affairs sergeant, lieutenant, watch commander, metro executive lieutenant, special ops lieutenant (K-9, SWAT, EOD), and eventually captain. As a captain, Darrell served as the Police Department Labor Liaison Officer, the Captain of Operations Central Patrol Division, and Captain of the Investigations Special Investigation Detail that includes gang and narcotic units. Darrell developed extensive experience with school safety while supervising School Resources Officers that provide security for the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) and Natomas School District. In addition, Darrell served on the Sacramento City Unified School District Emergency Preparedness Team and supervised gang prevention programs citywide, SCUSD Magnet School Academies, and programs for students at SCUSD and Natomas Attendance Centers. Darrell completed Peace Officers Standards and Training Management School in 2003 and was the first officer from the Sacramento Police Department to attend and graduate from the Los Angeles Police Department West Point Leadership Program in 2004. He earned an SPD distinguished service award, an SPD departmental unit citation, and an Award of Merit from California Peace Officers Association. He has successfully completed difficult assignments coordinating security for the 2003 USDA Conference, the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track Trials, the 2005 Sacramento memorial services for Congressman Robert T. Matsui, and the 2005 California Police Chiefs Conference. In addition, Darrell has been recognized with resolutions from the State Senate and Assembly for his work on investigating and suppressing Asian gang crime in Sacramento. In addition to his distinguished service to the community as a police officer, Darrell has spent innumerable personal hours in organizations including the Downtown Partnership Board, Juvenile Justice Commission, Alcohol Drug Advisory Board, Sacramento Riverfront Master Plan Committee, Asian Peace Officers Association, Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership (CAPITAL), My Sister's House Domestic Violence Shelter, and Sacramento District Attorney Citizen Academy. Darrell is married to his wife Joy for over 30 years and has three children (Justin, Lauren, & Kyle) that have attended local schools. Darrell's twin brother, Derrick, is a prominent local restaurateur. |
