Candidate for
Mayor; City of Atascadero

Tom O'Malley and his wife Peggy were both born and raised in Atascadero, California. They attended kindergarten through High School in Atascadero, as did their three children; Maggie, Merry and Trevor. Maggie and Merry, both college graduates, are school teachers. Trevor, a West Point graduate, is a Captain in the Army. Tom's grandmother was an early school teacher in the area and his mom owned a small beauty parlour downtown, not far from (his uncle Jim's) Stoltey's Malt Shop. Tom's dad was one of the first fulltime firefighters at Atascadero Fire Department. Peggy's dad began Layton's Tree Service, one of the first tree trimming businesses in town. Tom was Student Body President at Cuesta College, received his BA in Economics at U.C.S.B. and an M.A. from Cal Poly. He taught elementary school on the Navajo Indian reservation after college. He was a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and retired as the Administrator of the County Mental Health Department. Peggy, also a Cal Poly graduate, has taught in Atascadero Schools for over twenty years. Now, Tom and Peggy own and operate Portola Inn B&B and Portola Event Planning which plans everything from Weddings to Community fundraising events. They attend Refuge Church. Tom is active in many community organizations in Atascadero including the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. Tom has served as President of the San Luis Obispo County Council of Governments, President of the Regional Transportation Authority, Chairperson of the Regional Air Pollution Control District, President of the Integrated Waste Management Authority, was a member of a Regional Water Quality Control Board (appointed by the Governor) and Chairperson of the SLO County Economic Vitality Corporation. Tom was a planning commissioner prior to being elected to the Atascadero City Council in 2002, 2006 and 2010, during which he twice served as Mayor. In 2012 he became the first elected Mayor of Atascadero, after running unopposed and served during the city's Centennial year of 2013. He is a candidate for re-election as Mayor in 2014.
