Paso Must Diversify Its EconomyBy Pamela AvilaCandidate for Councilmember; City of Paso Robles | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Any business person will tell you that one of the worst strategic moves is to "put all your eggs in one basket" (i.e. rely on a single customer or a single supplier).Paso MUST develop a solid plan for diversifying its economy, beginning with attracting companies in industries other than tourism. We must carefully consider what types of businesses to recruit and we must work hard to retain the businesses that are already here. We want businesses that fit with the character of the community, that will provide well-paying head of household jobs, that will work with the overall community to ensure that Paso continues to be a great place to live and work. The City must change its processes so that Paso really is a "business friendly" community. Paso currently has an opportunity to bring to Paso a pilot project that would save the City a significant amount of money, offer 40-50 good paying jobs up front, enable Paso to promote itself as an environmentally conscious community, AND be a magnet for other new businesses! Right now, there are elements in City Hall that are very sluggishly considering whether to move forward or not. This is unacceptable. While tourism will remain the backbone of our economy, Paso's future + our future + depends on a local economy that is diversified. |
