Why I Am Running for the Chula Vista School Board

About Me:

I have been a resident in South County for over 50 years. During this time I have served as a teacher, principal and district superintendent. I have also been a university professor at San Diego State University, coordinating and teaching in the Educational Leadership Department.

I have been married for 44 years and have two adult children and four grandchildren--two of whom attend the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

I am also a 30-year member of the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club. Through my Kiwanis service I volunteer for many projects including the Miracle Mile of Quarters which supports Rady's Children's Hospital in their fight against children's cancer. I also volunteer my time to support a Clothing Pantry which provides clothing, shoes and undergarments to needy children and another project we call "The Act of Kindness" which helps needy families during the holiday season.

Work Experience:

I have 40 years of service as a public school educator. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree from San Diego State University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego.

I retired from the National School District in 2007 with 35 years of service, including 16 years as their superintendent. In 2007, I accepted an invitation from San Diego State University to coordinate their Educational Leadership Department. I did this for four years and fully retired in December of 2011.

Why I am seeking to be a board member:

I feel that the experiences I have gained as a teacher, principal, superintendent and university instructor can contribute to the advances the district has made in the recent past. I would like the district to continue its progressive focus on developing 21st century skills for all students, by giving our students access to technology tools that will strengthen their skills sets in reading, writing, math and science. I would also like to see the district support its endorsement of dual language programs and the value of global awareness and diversity. I would be a strong advocate for safe and supportive schools that are engaging, positive and motivating. The ability to make progress on these levels requires individuals who desire to work as a team, collaborate with both administrators and staff, and maintain an open and transparent communication line with our parents and community members.

What do I see as the greatest challenge facing the district?:

The greatest immediate priority for the district is its negotiations with the teachers' union. However, this is the responsibility of the sitting board and superintendent, and I am confident both sides will find an amicable settlement in the best interests of students. Beyond this, Chula Vista is a progressive district that has been recognized repeatedly for its strong focus on instructional quality and school performance. I believe another priority issue in the district is the transition to the new Common Core curriculum and State Standards. The new State Standards are rigorous and will require thoughtful planning and professional development for all teachers. In addition, the shift to the new curriculum will require investment and research of new technologies to supplement and support the Common Core Standards, and give students access to 21st century tools that support the rigor of the new curriculum.

How would I make the district a better educational institution?:

I would do this by being a student advocate--first and foremost, and ensuring that my votes on policy matters supports this core value, and the District's mission and vision. I would also ensure that our tax dollars are being spent wisely and that everyone is held accountable to the highest standards. As a member of the Governing Board, I would make every opportunity to visit our schools, attend school events, celebrate school successes, serve on designated committees, etc. Effective board members are those who keep themselves informed and stay connected with the priorities and progress of the district.
