Full Biography for Anthony Phan
Candidate for |
Anthony's passion for education started early when he was a student in high school. Through his teachers, he saw first-hand how knowledge could spark change and innovation. After becoming the first in his family to graduate high school at Andrew P. Hill, he was also the first to attend college, enrolling at UCLA for his Bachelor of Arts, before receiving a Certification in Political Psychology from Stanford University. His activist roots developed in college, where he participated in student government, taking part in rallies and protests against rising tuition costs and irresponsible management of the University of California. It was very common to see Anthony on strike in solidarity with university and healthcare workers. Anthony briefly served on the University of California Student Association Board of Directors, where he represented over 300,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional UC students. There, he worked to advocate for responsible solutions in education policy with State and Federal Legislators. The same year, he was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve as San José Library & Early Education Commissioner. As commissioner, Anthony worked tirelessly to extend weekend hours within the public library system and advocated for free youth programs. Impressed by Anthony's leadership, the East Side Union High School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint him to the Board Audit Committee as an Alternate Member. There, he works hard to ensure district funds are managed and allocated appropriately. In 2014, Anthony was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve in his administration as a Board Member of the US Selective Service System. He was nominated by Governor Jerry Brown. |
