Alex was born in San Francisco and has been a Bay Area native all of his life. He was raised in Pacifica and attended the University of California at Berkeley where he received Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Applied Materials, and held numerous engineering and technical management positions. While working, he completed a second Masters Degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. During his tenure at Applied Materials, he was a core technologist for gas and chemical delivery systems and sat on numerous health, safety and environmental committees. He is also a California licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer and has a dedicated interest in keeping Los Altos safe and ensuring our public utilities meet the gas, water and electrical standards and codes in our aging infrastructure. After a decade at Applied Materials, Alex left his corporate position to fulfill his dream of completing a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford. During his doctoral work, he married his wife of 17 years, Martha, and moved to Los Altos. While in school, he started an engineering firm, Glew Engineering. By the time he graduated, his engineering practice was successful, and he has been running it ever since. His business is located in Mountain View, CA. It provides engineering consulting serves to a large, diverse, worldwide customer base. A portion of the business involves expert testimony and litigation support. The client base includes Caterpillar, Nisan, and numerous technology companies and the US Federal Government. Alex has spoken many times in Federal District Court, the International Trade Commission, International Arbitration, and the High Court of Taiwan and is a compelling, authoritative public speaker. Alex's experience with buying and remodeling his office building in Mountain View gives him empathy with the downtown commercial building owners in Los Altos, but he does not have any conflicts of interest. He does not do business with the City of Los Altos, and does not own commercial property therein. Alex sits on the Cal Berkeley Alumni Awards Committee and is passionate about education. He is grateful to the many dedicated teachers who gave him his love of math and science and will work hard to ensure our children in Los Altos continue to receive the best education available such that they too can achieve their educational dreams. He and his wife Martha are active in animal groups and show golden retrievers in their spare time. |
