Promoting College and Career Readiness Today our students our graduating with large student loan debt and may or may not be prepared for an actual career or job that can help pay off their debt. Ensuring our students are exposed to a variety of careers while still in high school and that they also learn some technical skills is key to their career success after graduation. For example, students who learn manufacturing skills become better engineers, able to design products that are able to be manufactured. We have a disconnect with what jobs and careers are most needed in our community and what we are preparing students for. Working with our community and business partners is vital. Reducing the Education and Equity Gap The new Local Control Funding Formula started by the state for K-12 public schools last year provides extra dollars for students who are English language learners, foster youth, or from low-income families. Even though Campbell UHSD is funded by property taxes and not LCFF, we still have a desire (and do) use extra funds on these students groups to help them succeed at the same levels as all other students. We cannot take for granted that students have the same support and access to information at home. It is our mission as educators to provide every students with the tools they need for success, and some students need more tools than others. Making sure that all of our students receive equal treatment is also part of this equation. Maintaining Competitiveness Every company knows that in order to compete you need to attract and retain the best qualified personnel. We are very proud of our teachers, staff and administration in Campbell UHSD. But each year we lose some excellent people to surrounding districts who offer higher salaries and benefits, and potential new staff choose other districts for the same reason. Prioritizing our resources to ensure that we can attract and retain staff while maintaining fiscal health is key to addressing this issue. |
