I have been a strong leader on the Board of Trustees of the Fullerton Joint Union High School District. My leadership has resulted in a District that is second to none. This paper highlights some of my efforts, along with my fellow Board members, and the programs that have resulted from these efforts that have made The Fullerton Joint Union High School District great. The successes outlined need to be continued through my re-election to the Board of Trustees. I have worked very hard to represent all the residents of our District and to see that ALL of our students are given the highest quality learning opportunities. We have been able to meet the educational needs of our diverse student population by providing a strong, comprehensive curriculum through courses for all ability levels, a wide range of electives, and a concentration on basic skills such as reading, writing, math and moral values. Additionally, I have worked hard to establish: Magnet programs in medicine, marketing and business, technology, agriculture, humanities, culinary and fine arts; the most extensive summer school program in Orange County; a program for the so-called, "mid-students", called AVID, to prepare them for entry into UC and Cal state level schools; an expanded Opportunities Programs for our most at-risk students; a program to prepare entering 9th graders; a California Model Continuation School; expanded career counseling/guidance services available to all students. Being a 22-year Board member of the North Orange County Regional Occupational Programs, I have worked hard to provide relevant career vocational educational programs. Our District has over 2000 students taking at least one ROP course during the day and hundreds more taking classes at night, from a full array of over 90 programs designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce or further education such as: o Culinary Arts; Medical Careers, Auto Mechanics and Auto Body repair & detailing o Computer programming and repair; computer graphic design; o Forensics o Construction & Electronics Technology o Recreation Occupations & home economics, early childhood development o Power, energy and transportation o Public safety services and pharmaceutical o Our LVN program has a state licensing test rate passage that is one of the best in the State. By combining our ROP students with our academy programs, we have a very high percentage of our students enrolled in career, vocational education, programs. In special education, we have developed programs for students with disabilities, and are engaged in using a specialized academic instruction model that provides more emphasis on direct instruction in reading, writing, and math., with additional psychologist services. A community based instruction (CBI) and autism program was added at Sonora High School, and a CBI program with CSUF partnership was added at Troy High School. Our District students have received numerous prestigious County, State and National awards and recognition. All 5 comprehensive high schools are in the top 5% nationally according to U>S> News and world Report. We are not content to rest upon our many successes as we continually look to the future to improve upon our programs where possible. The Board provided oversight of the over $160 million in Bond and modernization construction projects, that were completed on-time and within budget. The students were provided with 136,754 square feet of new classroom space, including a "bonus" building at Troy High School for the Endeavor Program. Over $90 million in State matching funds were received. Because of the effective leadership of the Board, the District received the highest bond rating possible from Moody's Investment services on Wall Street in 2005 and reaffirmed in 2009, when Moody's stated "The District manages its finances as well as any School District in America." This resulted in a 25% lower tax burden to property owners. The District recently completed construction of new La Sierra (alternative) and La Vista (Continuation) High Schools. The new construction provided 60,000 square feet for over 800 students, by using $34 million in State matching funds and redevelopment agency funds, and no local General Obligation Bond funds. The Board of Trustees has a rich history of safeguarding public funds so that financial resources are carefully spent in order to support the high-quality educational programs. Fiscal responsibility has always been sought by our District. By carefully cutting overhead and instituting cost-saving methods, beginning a number of years ago, we have been able to accumulate some reserves that have enabled the District to weather the fiscal crises better than most of the Districts in the county. In addition, in our comprehensive summer school program, students may take advantage of 32 additional days of instruction at all of our schools.
This paper has only provided a snapshot of some of the services I have rendered as a Board Member to make this District great. My record of service has been marked by PROGRESS, INNOVATION, CONSISTENCY, and ACCOMPLISHMET AND STABILITY. I believe that my record of service has earned your vote for re-election in order to continue to keep our schools GREAT. This is not the time to change the team that has provided great schools with high quality programs for all of our students. |
