Spieker Properties- Continuing Care Retirement CommunityBy Stephanie G. FrischCandidate for Council Member; City of San Juan Capistrano | |

Looking at facts, not listening to rumors. This is the continuing care project for adults 60 and over that is proposed for the area behind Armstrong Garden Center near Kinoshita Elementary School. When completed, this project will have about 400 units on 35 acres of land. Being a Medicare specialist, I meet with older Americans every day and hear their frustrations about their living options--specifically their need for smaller homes in a community specifically designed for seniors, and a place that offers an easy transition to Assisted Living if needed. The proposed project offers a viable housing option for older Americans that is currently lacking in our community. On the face of it, the property is severely degraded. The "greenhouses" that we see on the property are not used for growing plants. These "greenhouses" are just used for storage. This property has not been used for true agriculture in decades--nothing has been grown here. In the end, we must respect the property owner's right to sell his property. The project still needs to go through the vigorous city approval processes before it comes to the city council. Any relevant issues will be brought to light then |
