Old Marina and Former Ft Ord Water SystemsBy William "Bill" LeeCandidate for Board Member; Marina Coast Water District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Hello, my name is Bill Lee. I 'm running for Re-Election as one of the five directors for the marina coast Water district, the district has provided the water and sewer service in central marina for decades. With the closing of Ft Ord, the district has added the duties of providing water and sewer services throughout the former Ft Ord area, to include the major projects of Marina Heights, University Villages, Cypress Knolls and the Marina Municipal Airport. Other areas of the former Ft Ord include portions of Seaside, Del Rey Oaks, the two golf courses, new military housing, Cal State University Monterey Bay and the east garrison housing project. The two water systems are different, central marina has about 42 miles of water pipe, 3 wells, 4 lift stations and 37 miles of sewage removal pipe. The Ft Ord system is much larger with 170 miles of water pipe, 3 wells, 20 lift stations and 140 miles of sewer pipe. the two systems have been cross- connected to allow for mutual water support During times of trouble. The costs of water are the same for use in central marina as they are at ft ord. the difference in the water bill is related to the much Higher costs of distribution at Ft Ord. Next I would like to talk briefly about my qualifications: I can be of service to my fellow citizens because of my real experience in related fields of work. I have been a resident of marina since 1978, I know and respect our area and I will work to keep our Environment safe. After serving for over twenty years, I retired from the army as a major. During that service I graduated from the California military academy and the Army Finance School. The military experience developed my financial management skills enabling me to better serve as your representative. My construction background includes serving as water company construction superintendent and overseeing the construction of the Toro wastewater facility along reservation road near highway 68, this facility now serves about 1,100 homes and additional commercial uses. Community involvement includes: almost 2 years on the water conservation commission which advises the water district board of directors, and I served on the marina economic development commission for two terms which advises the city council on economic issues. Over the years I was a member in the marina rotary club, the American legion of marina and the marina chamber of commerce. In 2006 the you elected me to be your representative as director marina coast water district, where i have served for almost 8 years. And have served as vice president and President during that time. During my tenure the board has continued to acquire property and water rights in order to insure adequate water supplies for our children and grandchildren. We, The Directors of the Marina Coast Water district have managed our water resources and infrastructure in such a way as to insure a continuous supply of clean, safe and affordable water for marina residents. We pay less per acre foot than anyone else in the region. We do everything we can to restrict the pollution of the aquifers in our area of influence, promote recycling of water where applicable, make policy decisions to insure the district goals are met, and plan for the upgrade and replacement of infrastructure as needed. The Monterey bay regional Future water projects will improve river flows and habitat; help restore the seaside aquifer, will use renewable energy, reduce wastewater discharge to the Monterey bay marine sanctuary and increase water reliability for the Monterey peninsula, which is critical to our economy. It's a simple solution, Elect Lee, Nishi & Gustafson to get Marina Coast Water back on track. The alternative is to lose jobs on the peninsula greatly affecting marina residents as many of these jobs are ours. If we chose not to implement this regional water project and replace the water lost by the cease and desist order from the courts, we stand to loose jobs on the peninsula greatly affecting marina residents as many of these jobs are ours. There's a simple, guaranteed way to end any argument about the regional water project's price tag. Just ask the detractors to identify a cheaper solution. They can't. |
