What Richard Stands For

By Richard Amir "TJ" Tahvildaran-Jesswein

Candidate for Member, Board of Education; Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Richard's philosophy on education is informed by his hands-on experience in the classroom and involvement in creating innovative, effective curriculum while protecting our tax dollars. His philosophy is based on three core ideals:

A. Education as foundation for civic life. Invigorating learning environments are essential for strong, dynamic democratic communities. If SMMUSD students are to become responsible, productive citizens with bright ideas and fresh perspectives capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century, we need sound school district policies that focus on the joy of learning.

B. Innovation in education. Relevant engaged learning is one of life's great joys. When students can't connect what's happening in the classroom with what's happening in their lives and our community, it's time for change. Taking the time to listen, talk, and think together, as students, teachers, and parents, we can restructure, rebuild and revitalize our programs and facilities. More win-win outcomes are possible.

C. Dedication to the dream. Education is the way America delivers on the promise that every American has the opportunity to flourish and prosper. As a teacher, community leader and father, Richard holds fast to the values of equality, justice and dignity. Sharing and respecting these guiding values affords us the space to disagree, challenge each other, and change course when necessary.

As a School Board member, Richard will work to:

  • Create educational experiences that are diverse, inspiring, and fulfilling

  • Close the achievement gap

  • Insure equal opportunity in academic programs

  • Expand college pathways

  • Ensure early childhood development

  • Expedite the rebuilding of Santa Monica High School

  • Balance emphases on math, science, social studies and the arts (Adding the Arts to STEM resulting in a richer commitment to STEAM)

  • Champion educational outcomes that matter to students and foster a joy of learning
