1. What is the role of the City Auditor? Why do you think you are qualified to do this job?
The City Auditor protects Oakland taxpayers. Through objective and impartial analysis of City operations and programs including all books and agencies, the City Auditor holds the City accountable for its expenses. The auditor issues reports to the public, elected decision-makers and City administration detailing findings, conclusions and recommendations to promote transparency and efficiency in government.As Auditor I'll protect Oakland's taxpayers from waste, fraud and mismanagement by ensuring responsible, transparent financial practices. I'll be a Watchdog for the community in responding to citizen complaints while also working proactively to increase City Hall efficiency.
I have two decades of professional experience as a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner and CPA working with national firms KPMG and Deloitte. As an Adjunct Professor of Audit, I have performed audits for agencies including Fortune 500 companies, U.S. Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor, and City/County of San Francisco. Working in both internal audit departments in government and non-government organizations I bring the knowledge and values necessary to have more transparency and accountability in Oakland.
2. Elaborate on your top priorities for the Auditor's office.
Fiscal Accountability - It is important for Oakland to run agencies and programs efficiently. I'll protect Oakland's taxpayers from waste, fraud and mismanagement by ensuring responsible, transparent financial practices.Public Safety/Quality of Life - I will work to ensure accountability in City Hall, which protects our city's fiscal health, public safety and core services.
Transparency - Oaklanders deserve to know where their tax dollars are going in our local government. I will respond to citizen complaints and keep the public informed on spending and efficiency in Oakland.
