Biographical Highlights
  • Occupation: Mayor of Oakland
  • I am the daughter of an immigrant mom, worked in the family restaurant, and attended UC Berkeley on a scholarship.
  • I started in public service as a union organizer for immigrant women workers
  • I served as a school board member for 11 years, then 8 years as a councilmember before becoming the first woman mayor
  • I chaired the International Affairs Committee in addition to working with ABAG and the National League of Cities on the US Conference of Mayors
  • I'm currently serving Oakland as its member of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in addition to being mayor.
  • I've raised my children in Oakland Public Schools with my husband, a physician who has been active in the fight for healthcare for all.

  • Public Safety including making all our neighborhoods safe for families to play in the park, businesses to flourish, and children to attend school.
  • Equitable economic development that provides good sustainable jobs and housing for Oaklanders in all of our neighborhoods.
  • Promoting a green city with sustainable development, clean parks and creeks and housing in transit corridors.
