Steve Somers, Deputy District Attorney for the Monterey County District Attorney's office, is a criminal prosecutor with experience in over a hundred trials. Since 2002, his assignments have included domestic violence, general felonies and major felonies. In 2012, he received the Award of Excellence from the Monterey County Peace Officers Association.

For the last nine years, Steve has served on the District Attorney's Major Felony Trial Team, successfully trying the toughest of cases including; murder, gang violence, fraud, kidnapping, torture, robbery, and major drug cases. He has seen first-hand how crime, especially violent crimes, negatively impact the entire community.

Steve holds a strong belief that everyone who walks into court should be treated with the same dignity and respect, whether they are a victim, witness, juror, or the accused. He knows that the court system works best when the people within that system do their jobs diligently and with honor. He is known for his commitment to these principles, and if elected to serve the People of Monterey County as a Superior Court Judge he will serve in this new capacity with the same commitment.

Prior to serving in the Monterey County District Attorney's office, Steve worked in the Shasta County District Attorney's office, focusing on domestic violence cases, narcotics task force and misdemeanors. Before he earned his law degree, Steve was an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and taught 6th grade outdoor science education. In his spare time, Steve has volunteered for the Nature Conservancy, and has coached and scored high school mock trials.

Steve attended the University of California Santa Barbara where he graduated with a double major in Political Science and Environmental Studies. He graduated cum laude from Vermont Law School where he also served as the Notes Editor for the Vermont Law Review.

Steve is married to Tracey Spencer, an Investigator for the Monterey County District Attorney's office. She is also an adjunct instructor at Hartnell Community College in Salinas teaching Administration of Justice. They have two young daughters Kendal and Alexandra.
