ABOUT BILL SUTHERLAND Bill's love and dedication to Torrance has prompted him to seek the office of Mayor where he pledges to treat all with respect and openness. Bill is a 36-year resident of Torrance and a strong believer in open government. His wife Diana has been a resident since her first birthday. LEADERSHIP WITH INTEGRITY Bill was first elected to City Council in June 2006 as a reform candidate and is recognized for openness, integrity and honesty. He believes that character, tenacity, hard work, self-reliance, and personal responsibility are essential ingredients for all members of the Torrance City Council. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Bill served many years on the Salvation Army Board supporting its fine work and youth programs. He was twice elected Chairman. Bill was awarded the coveted "Director Emeritus" status. For over 30 years he has been an active member of Rotary International serving in many leadership positions. He is an active supporter of many non-profit community organizations COMMITMENT TO YOUTH Bill and his wife Diana live in Old Downtown Torrance where you will often see them walking and shopping there. As devoted youth soccer fans, Bill and Diana are ardent supporters of the youth sports activities that provide multiple recreational opportunities for all Torrance residents. His involvement in Torrance sports includes serving as a Little League and Torrance American Baseball coach and regional Commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). PATRIOTIC AT ALL LEVELS Bill prides himself on being a patriot and has been an ardent supporter of the Torrance Armed Forces Parade, and served as the Chair of the Council's Armed Forces Day Committee. Our City is proud to present the longest running and uninterrupted (53 years) Armed Forces celebration in the Nation. FISCALLY AWARE Bill understands the nuances and impacts of our Nation's and State's financial crises and their impact on Torrance. He serves as the City's Finance and Governmental Operations Committee Chairman. Never one to only be partially involved, Bill also serves on the Public Safety Committee and the Community Planning and Design Committee. Prior to being elected to the City Council, Bill served for eight years as a Civil Service Commissioner. TORRANCE'S CONTINUED INVOLVEMENT Bill knows that in order to keep Torrance viable we need to reach out beyond the borders of Torrance. Where he serves as the voting delegate to the League of California Cities. As a small business owner since 1981, he understands the challenge of running a business in hard times. Bill is a strong advocate for streamlined regulation and championed the one-stop permitting center that has become so popular and allowed easier access and a friendly atmosphere for continued business growth in Torrance. |
