Goals and ObjectivesBy Berta González-HarperCandidate for Member, City Council; City of Santa Clarita | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I am a grassroots candidate without big money or special interest donors. I have no further political aspirations, serving this community is my goal.I oppose and will work tirelessly to defeat the Soliz vs. City of Santa Clarita lawsuit filed against us, which if successful would change how our city functions forever by forcing us to form segregated voting districts based upon race or ethnicity. Forced districting will deny all of us the ability to vote for all 5 council representatives, pitting districts against each other for coveted taxpayer dollars placing less affluent districts at a disadvantage for investment in their community. I also believe it will discourage minority participation in our municipal elections. The majority of voters approved our current City of Santa Clarita at large (not districted) election system which this lawsuit seeks to now change. Seek support for city sponsored Neighborhood Councils/Commissions to facilitate closer partnering of residents with city staff and other stakeholders to focus on and address neighborhood issues, and identify and mentor future community leaders. I will also put more emphasis on the needs of the senior population, explore the feasibility of City owned municipal senior centers, work towards providing more senior focused amenities throughout the city such as a larger senior center, and additional centers, possibly one in Canyon Country. Continue to fight the Ventura County farm interests, Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, and our own Santa Clarita Valley County Sanitation District of Los Angeles County. They are forcing upon us water treatment methods costing millions of our taxpayer dollars in order to clean up state water we BUY from the state of California supposedly in order to solve an agricultural problem that has not been proven even exists. Continue to press for clean up of remaining contaminated areas on the Whittaker-Bermite property. Once the Whittaker-Bermite site is deemed safe and available for development, (target date as of now is 2016), complete our cross town roads to ease traffic congestion, and determine if it would be feasible to site a teaching hospital on the cleaned and verified safe property, bringing in good paying jobs and a second much needed hospital to serve our residents. Continue our law enforcement and community preservation efforts to maintain and improve residents' quality of life, especially in our more established older neighborhoods. I retired early and have the time to dedicate full time to public service. I am a grassroots candidate without big money or special interest donors. I have no further political aspirations, serving this community is my goal. And most importantly, I will listen to the residents and strive to fairly address the issues important to them. |
