Political Philosophy for Jeff Hewitt

As a lifelong Libertarian, I have always felt that government has intruded in our lives more than it had a moral right to. I believe our forefathers envisioned a society that allowed man to rise to whatever heights he was willing to aspire and climb to. He was also allowed to enjoy the fruits of his labor in any way he chose as long as it did not substantially hurt someone else. There is a basis for law when the absence would spell chaos but what we do today is far from the original intent. Any time there is a perceived harm we immediately pass an ordinance to make sure it doesn't happen again. In so doing, we keep others from succeeding. The child that burns his hand on the hot stove top after being told not to has "wisdom" along with a scar that will remind him of the mistake. The child who heeds his parent's warning may never question any thing he is told and lead an uneventful life of low expectations and "safe" alternatives. Society needs both types. However, in our haste to make sure that no child ever suffers the pain of burning their hand, we pass a law requiring that all stove tops be raised high enough so that children cannot reach them. In so doing we keep numerous future great chemists and chefs from ever discovering their passion. The problems facing our state require looking past our party affiliations and taking each issue on its own merit and that is where a third party without a caucus can reach across the aisle and find consensus. |
