Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Diana Mahmud

Candidate for
Member, City Council; City of South Pasadena

This information is provided by the candidate

  • I am RETIRED and have no competing work demands. Have the time to fully review and consider the often complex items brought before city council.
  • Improve our infrastructure by accelerating street and sidewalk repair out of reserves which are excessive, currently about 55% of the general fund. We are only earning 0.5% on the reserves yet the cost of street repair has doubled in the last 8 years and is expected to double again in the next 10 years. And we have identified $50 million in needed street repairs, based upon their current condition. It costs four times as much to repair a street in ok versus poor condition. I have several decades of work experience as a public works attorney and know how things should be done.
  • Oppose the 710 in any form. Work on cost-sharing agreement with allied cities to share the cost of hiring experts to submit responsive comments to the draft EIR anticipated to be issued next spring. We need to start preparing now.
  • Contracts. Save taxpayers money by carefully reviewing City contracts before they're signed + this has not been done, the city has unwisely entered into some contracts such as the one with Global Water, the utility billing company. Many billing mistakes made, customer service inconsistent if not poor and Global Water hasn't delivered promised services.
  • Support downtown revitalization in a way that supports local businesses and maintains our small town character. This requires careful scrutiny of any development proposal to assure it is consistent with charming, historic structures.
  • Adopt more environmentally friendly practices where cost-effective in the long term.
  • Make our government more efficient by developing processes such as checklists to avoid mistakes when undertaking routine tasks, and better use of our citizen commissions, which are often ignored.
  • Promote open, accountable government to ensure the views of residents are heard and respected.
