Protecting our middle class. The foundations for a healthy Commonwealth are a good job that pays wages to support our families and a strong economy that enables everyone to attain and maintain a middle-class life. But so many more elements--affordable health care, retirement security, quality education for our children, job safety and civil and workplace rights--are essential for all working people. When elected I will: 1. Rebuild Pennsylvania's schools, infrastructure, and energy systems. There is no mystery to tackling the jobs crisis. We need to invest in repairing our crumbling 20th century infrastructure and build a modern clean energy infrastructure for the 21st century. These investments would put thousands of Pennsylvanians to work while laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and competitiveness. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, Pennsylvania needs $11 billion to repair our bridges alone. These investments would put thousands of Pennsylvanians to work while laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and competitiveness. 2. Revive Pennsylvania manufacturing and stop exporting good jobs overseas. We cannot hope to restore our economy to health unless we revive American and Pennsylvania manufacturing. This will require action on many fronts, including ending currency manipulation, reforming tax policy, strengthening government procurement policies and providing increased investment in job training for the industries we have in the 111th. 3. Put people to work doing work that needs to be done. There are thousands of Pennsylvanians that need full time work and there is plenty of work to be done. I will make sure that people are being trained in and matched with the markets that need new employees. The House must pass legislation to create jobs in PA that pay competitive wages and must not replace any existing jobs. 4. Help the Commonwealth and local governments avoid more layoffs and cutbacks of public services. Layoffs by state and local government are dragging down the economy and making a double dip recession more likely. The House should make a commitment not to lay off any more state employees and should provide for increased state funding of Medicaid when unemployment is high. The House must also be more aggressive in ensuring that public services and jobs are not cut due to the recession. The solutions I propose must be on the same scale as the problems we face. Half measures will not put Pennsylvanians back to work. Nor will the same old Harrisburg economic policies that drove our economy into the ground in the first place. |
