LWVGP Question: Given limited resources, what areas of funding are a priority for you and why?

By Jay Costa, Jr.

Candidate for State Senator; Pennsylvania State Senate; District 43

This information is provided by the candidate
Economic development and jobs + Job creation results when there is a plan that includes investments, innovation and proven development strategies such as PA Works, the Senate Democratic jobs plan. 2) Education- Pennsylvania cannot move forward if it disinvests in schools by more than a billion dollars. Schools must have the necessary resources to educate students and keep class sizes manageable.3) Health care + Access to health care choices is crucial. Pennsylvania cannot keep tearing at its safety net by reducing the ability of our citizens to receive quality, cost-effective care.

While we have great needs all around + jobs, health care, environmental protection + we must use limited resources to invest in our students and education system. The more than $1billion disinvestment in education by the Corbett administration has had negative implications. Student performance has gone down, class sizes have increased, local property taxes have risen and there is a sense that there is a reduced focus on education because of the lack of resources. Students need to be prepared for future jobs and challenges. Underfunding education creates an opportunity gap that negatively impacts our children and the economy.
