We need to be increasingly diligent in seeking new funding sources as well as exploring ways to creatively spend what funds we receive from the state.Cajon Valley, and public schools in general, face increasing budget pressures. Charter schools have affected the amount of money the district receives. With Proposition 13, schools have received less proportion of revenue from property taxes. I have served as co-chair of the District Budget Committee and am proud that our District has been fiscally responsible through very difficult budget years. As a Board member, I intend to continue fiscal responsibility. I have an understanding of how education is funded in this state and the problems. As a Board member, I intend to use any influence I have to attempt changes with respect to school funding. Because funding is directly tied to the number of children in chairs, we need to increase our numbers by improving education and marketing our accomplishments. We also need to consistently work to improve school attendance. Planning the budget in lean times requires priorities. As a member of the board, my top priorities are: (1) compensation for teachers that is competitive or exceeds competition. To attract and keep good talent, we have to pay teachers well. (2) Full healthcare benefits for teachers and their families. (3) Maintaining crucial classified positions for the safety and welfare of children in the District's care. I worked on the campaign to pass Proposition D - the bond measure and now I sit on the Citizen's Oversight Committee to oversee the use of the funds. I know what the funds are to be used for and I am excited to be part of a district that will be refurbishing schools and rebuilding some. I am also trained and understand the California Environmental Quality Act [CEQA] and will be able to assist with the legal requirements to start construction. |
