Toward a Success StoryBy Tony UbaldeCandidate for Member, Governing Board; Vallejo City Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The school district is moving in a positive direction that would enable students to learn and achieve their goals as effective and contributing citizens. The Vallejo City Unified School District has unfairly been described as a low achieving school district. Many are not aware, especially the last few years, that the district is turning itself around. The district has a lot of challenges because of the wide achievement gap among students, high drop out rate, and being unstable financially. The current school board has established goals that are achievable. The drop out rate has reduced from 50% down to 41%. Students are once again improving in meeting academic goals set by the state and federal governments. I believe, strongly, that if the district focuses on the first five years in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics the drop out rate will be reduced. If students are learning they will be motivated to stay in school. The fundamentals are basic to our kids' success. Secondly, we need to look at new programs that are supportive of kids. Programs have to be relevant to the kids Lastly, the district needs to explore the idea of a parents on campus program. There is nothing more assuring than when parents are true partners in the education of their kids. By being present on campus, there would be greater support, collaboration, and open communication between students, staff, parents and community. The school district is moving in the right direction. The majority of the current school trustees have endorsed my candidacy because they feel that I have the commitment to help them achieve the goals which they have set for the students. They feel that through their A-G program that all students will pass high school exit exams by the year 2014 and meet rigorous academic requirements that will enable students to go straight to college if they choose to do so. I would like the opportunity to be a part of this dynamic endeavor. |
