train personnel and implement programs to stop this from happening.Several times a year we hear news stories about a school age youngster committing suicide because of bullying by school mates. These cases of death are an extreme result of an epidemic happening in almost every school in the nation Students are dealing with physical threats as well as threats and intimidation through electronics and social media. School districts are slow to respond to this real problem. During my time as a school police officer, several parents reported bullying their students have suffered. Unfortunately, many times the level of intimidation does not rise to a criminal nature. School personnel need to be trained on how to recognize bullying and school administrators need the tools and support of the school board to use forms of intervention, suspensions and expulsions to eliminate the problem. Every student is entitled to a high quality free education from K-12th grade. I am a strong supporter of that right. However, when a students actions infringe on another students free exercise of his right to that education, something has to give. I propose a comprehensive program of education, intervention and removal of those students who do not respond to intervention. Every student has the right to be safe to, from and at school from these predators. |
