The Citizen-Initiated Urban Growth Boundary is Livermore's defining feature. It protects our unique quality of life.The single defining feature of Livermore is the citizen-initiated, Urban Growth Boundary. It has protected our hills, our scenic corridor and our prized vineyards. It has encouraged the new investment in our revitalized downtown. For the last 33 years, every time that the voters have had the opportunity, they have voted against sprawl and against greenfield development. It was the 2005 election against Pardee/Weyerheuser's attempt to break the Urban Growth Boundary that put me on the Council. Seventy-two per cent of voters supported the Urban Growth Boundary which contributes to the wonderful ambiance, open space and unique quality of life that we enjoy. In the most recent Citizen Survey report which came out in 2010, 92% of respondents agreed that Livermore was a great place to live. This year, with the City of Livermore's assistance, a multi-agency collaboration was able to leverage open space and settlement fees to acquire over 600 acres which will now be protected in the new EBRPD Doolan Canyon Preserve. The City also acquired over 100 acres at the base of Doolan Canyon and new acreage at Brushy Peak. In all, we have added over 1,000 acres of new open space and park lands in the last two years. |
