I have decided to run for re-election as supervisor in Marlborough Township. We have accomplished much over the last six years and placed the township back on solid footing. Local taxes today in Marlborough are what they were in 2005... a tough feat given 6 years of rising gas, electricity and health care costs. As a supervisor I worked with my colleagues to institute line item accountability in our budgets. We kept the size of local government small, we fought illegal land use, we opposed the expansion of the quarry into property zoned residential and we protected the land by passing ordinances designed to control residential development, including an ordinance referred to as `Conservation by Design'. We developed and welcomed relationships with our neighboring communities for the good of the region. We made positive changes. We planned 15 year programs for road improvement and heavy equipment purchases. Every road in the Township is now on a cycle for improvement. We planned purchases of police cars and negotiated for two police SUVs and a speed control device from the District Attorney's office at no cost to the township. But in contrast, in years past, the actions of some of the supervisors were very different. And I alluded to some of these contrasts in a recent letter mailed to voters for the upcoming Primary Election in Marlborough Township. I prefer to focus on the future and my bid for re-election is based on successes we worked hard to achieve over the last six years. I plan to continue to oppose and fight illegal land uses, especially in areas zoned residential, as we have done over the past several years, such as opposing the refining of cooking oil on Campbell Road, the processing of "paunch manure" on Haring Road and the expansion of the quarry around Crusher Road. Over the past six years I served with and worked well with many elected and appointed supervisors, both Democrats and Republicans: Bob Mensch, Sharon Young, Frank McCauley, Brian Doremus and Joan Smith. I also worked with Leroy Oelschlager and the late Ray Schell with other community groups. We will continue to protect the outdoors, provide good government, and exercise fiscal restraint. I plan to continue to work with my fellow supervisors to keep taxes low, and to manage staff and hired professionals to serve the township. For instance, tax dollars allotted to our solicitor are as low as I've seen them in years, yet we continue to find ways to do more with fewer dollars. I believe that a supervisor must be concerned with more than just the events that happen in his or her own backyard. I enjoy serving and am honored to represent you the residents of Marlborough Township and would appreciate your support on Primary Election day, Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
