From his work with the late Congressman Augustus F. Hawkins, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and his current position as District Director for Assemblymember Warren Furutani to his service on the Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board and his advocacy work at UCLA, Derrick Mims has amassed a strong track record of building partnerships between community colleges and universities, K-12 systems and businesses.

During his many years at Southwest College, Derrick played a key role in academic programs to increase student achievement, providing student scholarships and establishing community partnerships. His impact reached throughout the nine-college district.

Derrick is a native Angeleno who received all of his education in the city of Los Angeles. After graduating from Los Angeles Southwest College, he transferred to the University of Southern California where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in print journalism.
