Small Business, Jobs and Economic Development: The 8th Council District is the most economically depressed district in the City of Los Angeles and has the highest unemployment in the city. This nation's recession has meant economic depression for the residents and businesses of the 8th district. I will bring forth a successful conclusion to the many economic development projects that have been stalled for so many years in our communities. This will provide for the expansion of existing businesses in our neighborhoods, offer the opportunity for new businesses and corporations to function in our communities. Embrace and Expand Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurship is the engine that drives our economy and we need to encourage new ideas that lead to job creation. We need to "make work" when there is no work. I will encourage the development and expansion of local entrepreneurs, for it is the vitality of micro and small businesses that will grow and create a new sector of jobs, economic stability, and wealth in our communities. This is what I've spent the last 20 years of my life doing; encouraging, developing and expanding the capacity of local entrepreneurs. Expand Youth, Senior and Community Services: The people of the 8th district are the most important asset we have. The lives of our youth must be nurtured through healthy and inspiring programs that will support quality education, after school sports and recreational activities, and healthy eating. Collaborative intervention strategies are essential to assist and strengthen, whenever needed, those in the Foster Care System, and to encourage the pursuit of high school graduation, secondary education, college, trades and entrepreneurship. End Homelessness, Stop Gang Violence, Stop Domestic Violence, End Poverty: Everyone has a right to quality shelter, safe neighborhoods, a peaceful living environment and life. We must strengthen and expand programs and intervention strategies that work, and abandon those that don't. We must collaborate with Fire and Police departments, organizations, and people that have created and designed programs that work locally and can be expanded globally to end poverty, homelessness, gang violence, domestic violence and hopelessness that leads to violence. |
