Full Biography for Brendan F. Boyle

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Brendan Boyle grew up in the same row home in a blue collar neighborhood of the city. Brendan's father, Francis, immigrated to America from Ireland at age 19. Brendan attended Cardinal Dougherty High School, where he excelled. A top student, Brendan won academic scholarships to some of the top universities in the country. Brendan became the first in his family to go to college when he attended the University of Notre Dame. While a student at Notre Dame, Brendan majored in government and was selected for the Hesburgh Program in Public Service. He studied in Notre Dame's Washington Program, interning in legislative affairs. A passionate sports fan, Brendan was also a sportscaster on 640 WVFI-AM in South Bend, Indiana. For three years, he broadcasted Notre Dame Football and basketball games, making him literally "the voice of the Fighting Irish." After graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in government, Brendan served as a consultant to various agencies within the Department of Defense. Brendan was awarded for his work. After working in consulting for more than three years, Brendan left business and returned to academia to further study government and public policy. He attended graduate school at Harvard University. Brendan earned a master's degree in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. While at Harvard, he studied public policy under leading academics, former congressmen, and world leaders. Having studied at Notre Dame and Harvard, and having worked in consulting, Brendan choose to pursue a career in public service. In 2008, Brendan won a landslide victory and became the State Representative for the 170th Legislative District, a seat never held before by a democrat. The Philadelphia Daily News recognized Boyle's early promise as a lawmaker, naming him one of politics' top 10 rising stars in 2008. In April 2010 PoliticsPA named Rep. Boyle Most Likely to succeed stating that he is a force to watch in Harrisburg for years to come. During his first term in elected office, Rep. Boyle has had several pieces of legislation move out of committee and one piece of legislation become law. SB 369 which Rep. Boyle had companion legislation prime sponsored in the House as HB 1938 was signed into law October 9, 2009 by Gov. Rendell. It is formally known as Act 51 2009. Act 51 would allow for a monthly benefit which would be equal to the first responders monthly salary at the time of death and would increase annually base on the consumer price index. Most recently Rep. Boyle's bill known as the REACH Scholarship. Passed out of the Education Committee. This is a state wide merit based scholarship that would allow those who has a 3.0 GPA and 90% attendance to attend college tuition free. |
