If schools are note safe teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn. School safety has always been my top priority. I have worked hard to make sure the atmosphere in Fontana classrooms is the best possible for teaching and learning.
Without safe schools all of the best intentions for our students and the best financial planning are meaningless. If students and staff are not safe at school or in other district facilities kids can not learn. I have made school safety a priority even before I was elected to the school board in 1997. I have insisted on a highly qualified and professionally run school police department. I support the collaboration between the city and district police departments and work to maintain that connection. The level of professionalism in our school police department officers and support employees is the equal of any well run agency. Campus Security Officers and School Resource Officers are on our campuses every day ensuring the safety of students and staff. An important component of school safety is communication. The ability of agencies, employees, students and parents to freely share information is crucial to keeping our schools safe. Another contribution to school safety is the expulsion process. Board members must support programs that provide interventions that are intended to get disruptive and dangerous students on the right path. The first order of business, however, is to remove those students who are a threat to others. Not doing so is irresponsible, jeopardizes the safety of students and staff and destroys the teaching and learning environment in our classrooms. My voting record supports my intolerance for unreasonable student behavior. I will continue to make school safety a top priority. I will continue working to make sure the classroom atmosphere is the best possible for teaching and learning.
