Clean, renewable energy and our dependence on foreign oil.By Walter A. "Walt" Waite, Jr.Candidate for State Representative; District 161; Democratic Party | |

Developing and increasing our use of clean, renewable energy sources, and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.We have all heard the warnings that the supply of oil will not last forever and we must begin to develop alternative energy sources before the oil is gone. The sad fact is that I heard that same warning almost fifty years ago and yet here we are, still dependent on foreign oil. Part of the reason for that continued dependence is because those who profit the most from our demand for oil don't want that demand to change. But we must change, and there are two very important reasons for doing so. First, the warnings are correct, the oil will not last forever. Secondly, every time we fill our gas tank, some of that money makes it's way back to foreign governments who are happy to sell us the oil, yet really do not like us. Those governments use that money to fund groups who are bent on attacking America at every opportunity. There is a direct link between the gas in our cars and the bullets that are being fired at our troops. Developing clean, renewable energy sources will create jobs, reduce pollution and help break our dependence on foreign oil. Using tax incentives will help the growth of the industry and the development of more efficient technology. Requiring power suppliers to produce an ever increasing percentage of "clean energy" will reduce pollution. I would like to see educational opportunities created which would allow anyone loosing their job because of this transition to be retrained in the new clean energy fields which would help them move into the new jobs that are created. I realize that this will not be easy and will not happen overnight, however, we cannot wait any longer. Like any problem, it is easier and cheaper to solve today than it will be tomorrow. I have to wonder where would we be today if Thomas Edison believed the nay sayers and didn't follow through with the light bulb? |
