Creating a Challenging Educational Environments for all StudentsBy James "Jim" LombardiCandidate for Member, Board of Education; Tuckahoe Union Free School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Every student in our school district needs the opportunity to be academically challenged according to their abilities.Since NCLB (No Child Left Behind) legislation was passed in 2001 schools throughout the US are under pressure to meet mandated "minimum standards" and educational practices have resulted in "teaching to the test". As a consequence the bar for achievement has been actually lowered. NCLB provides no incentives for gifted, talented, and other high-performing students. We need to do a better job of challenging our students, giving them opportunities to excel and move ahead with an advanced curriculum. These opportunities need to be provided as early as possible in the K-12 spectrum to establish a behavior where children are encouraged and rewarded to 'go beyond' the minimum standards. These behaviors will serve our children well as they expand into the ever more competitive world that awaits them in college, graduate school and their professional lives. |
