Explanation of my position on those topics I consider critical.
February 11, 2010
I wish to express my gratitude to the League of Women Voters for their unbiased interest in this important election and the qualifications of the candidates. The forum they have provided for this purpose, "SmartVoter.org", seems an excellent one.
Thanks to that organization this statement of my positions on important subjects can be evaluated.
Please allow this to fully explain why I wish to be the Area 1 representative as a Trustee of Long Beach City College.
I will bring to the Board the perspective of an active teacher (14 years in the Lynwood Unified School District), as a parent of three children, and as a citizen concerned with the present and future educational needs of those residents in the greater Long Beach area.
I see myself as a person committed to the goal of affordable, high-quality, public education and deeply appreciate the critical role our exemplary community college plays in preparing students for their university experience, and in presenting viable, practical, and professional occupational/vocational training for careers across all collar colors.
I am now and have been a member of the National Teachers Association, the California Teachers Association, and my local union, The Lynwood Teachers Association for 14 years. There I have been an Executive Board member. Prior to entering the teaching profession I had been an active member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the Nuclear Energy and Aerospace Workers Union. I fully understand the growing need for a strong stand against those influences which do not consider instructional staff and budgeting for same as critical as other operating expenses. I know from firsthand experiences that staff at all levels is considered as the only area for "adjustment" and that "adjustment" is always downward.
I believe that the importance of the roles played by teachers, the true engines of education, can not be understated.
I believe that the time has come to place the faculty on the level it deserves! I believe that the faculty's contributions toward the reputation and success of the institution have to be recognized!
I believe that the important role played by Long Beach City College must be recognized, supported, publicized, and praised.
I believe that an active and thorough campaign must be initiated that will increase interest in Long Beach City College, encourage enrollment from students well beyond our city limits, and reach out into the region and internationally to bring enthusiastic and appreciative students onto our campus and into our classrooms. I believe that my experience as an active teacher and as a former advertising executive (20 plus years) can bring something unique and useful to The Long Beach Community College Board of Trustees. This is my message and my mission: Long Beach City College is a treasure to be valued, the role of the teachers who have polished that rough stone into a gem must be recognized, and the successes of our graduates must be publicized.
Please consider me as capable and conscientious as I aspire to represent you the voters, the community at large, the faculty, the support staff, and the students as a proactive member on the Long Beach City College Board of Trustees.
I welcome your questions, your scrutiny, and your support as we work together helping others prepare for their future... and ours.

Sincerely,

Timothy W. Tucker
