A school board member's job is to support policy which focuses on student achievement and the overall well-being of each student. Board members must work with the Superintendent to monitor student achievement, identify strengths and weaknesses in achievement, and then work to improve in areas of weakness. Quality teachers, curricula developed from valid research, interventions with struggling students, gifted programs for accelerated students, programs that foster creativity, a bevy of extra-curricular options, and continuous pressure on Congress to support education are some ways to move toward the ultimate goal of high student achievement and success for all students.
Teachers need to be given the tools necessary to analyze achievement data and then the tools to help students where they are not achieving to the highest expectations. The Superintendent with the support of the Board should make sure that teachers receive professional development regarding what students need to know to be successful in the 21st century along with teaching techniques that address the various ways in which students learn. The Superintendent and the Board should work together to write school district goals and action plans which, above all else, create a school climate that lends itself to high student achievement and the creation of the over-all well-being of each student.
