Mary Ann's Positions on Local and Regional Issues

By Mary Ann Lutz

Candidate for Mayor; City of Monrovia

This information is provided by the candidate
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Our city must remain solvent to provide the level of service to which we have become accustomed. It is important to balance fiscal responsibility with looking toward the future and being nimble enough to make timely adjustments when needed.

PUBLIC SAFETY: The most important job of our city is to maintain a safe environment wherein citizens to live, work and play. Supporting our Police, Fire and Public Works departments with the tools they need are paramount to achieving this goal.

IMPROVED EDUCATION: Teamwork with our School Board is crucial to achieving our educational goals. I recommit to take the lead in supporting our schools and continue my hands-on work with my two adopted schools, Santa Fe Middle and the Adult/ROP.

PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE FOOTHILLS: I support the Wilderness Hillside Resource Management Plan along with the protective provisions for access to those who live near and within the Preserve. The plan is in its infancy of implementation, there is much more work to be accomplished.

DEVELOPMENT: Noted Sociologist Herbert Spencer wrote, "Progress, therefore, is not an accident, but a necessity -- it is a part of nature." I believe that progress should be planned to meet our needs. With my fellow Council Members, I share a sincere desire to balance individual property rights with the development goals of the community as a whole, seeking a balance between retail, office and residential projects.

YOUTH SUPPORT: I was instrumental in bringing the Monrovia Youth Employment Service (YES) to Monrovia. I have always supported youth organizations such as The Monrovia Youth Commission, Girl Power, Monrovia Youth Alliance, Boys and Girls Club and YMCA to name just a few, and this will never change.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Continuation of the Gold Line through Monrovia is a major focus of our City Council and the San Gabriel Valley. I am prepared to commit to this goal in a leadership role.

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES: I am committed toward moving our community to a healthy, green environment while balancing our economic responsibilities. Our Monrovia Accords have begun that process. We need to conserve water, be more sensitive to our environment, and continue to work toward a "green" Monrovia.

COMMUNICATION: I'm proud of my accessibility to the citizens of Monrovia. In my tenure, the Council has taken many steps to improve communication by reopening City Hall on Fridays, raising the bar of communication to residents and businesses regarding new and improving development projects, and improving the City's website (http://www.cityofmonrovia.org).

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY:

As a member of the City Council I represent our city in the following capacities (past and present):

  • Chair, LA Regional Water Quality Control Board, gubernatorial appointment.
  • LA League of California Cities.
  • San Gabriel Council of Governments, Board & Environmental Committee.
  • Southern California Association of Governments, housing and environmental committees.
  • LA County Integrated Waste Management Task Force.
  • Adopt-a-School:
Santa Fe Middle and Monrovia Adult/ ROP.
