- Reduce Military Spending
-
Our strength and security depend on education, health and a vibrant economy much more than on military might, but 60% of the nation's discretionary budget is devoted to the Pentagon and the War in Iraq. The Speaker of the "New Direction Congress" says they are authorizing funds to begin increasing the size of the Army and Marine Corps. This bi-partisan obsession with military might makes us less safe. Instead, we need more investment in people.
- Invest in Education
-
My State University tuition in 1972 was less than the cost of books. California has done it before, we can fund higher education.
- Invest in Health
-
Overhead costs for Medicare are 3 to 5%, but the insurance industry charges 31% for overhead and profit. Other countries have proven that single payer health care provides better life expectancy and better care for their people, at less than half the cost we're paying now.
