"When in the course of human events....", and "We the people...." + thus begin two of the most famous change documents in the history of mankind; the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America.Vote! Vote! Vote! Friday, 24 October 2008 EDITOR, "When in the course of human events....", and "We the people...." + thus begin two of the most famous change documents in the history of mankind; the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America. Having escaped Russian Totalitarianism during the Hungarian revolution in 1956 with my mother, these words have always meant much to me. Participating personally and directly in the political process this year, these words mean even more to me now. I have come to understand clearly how all politics is local and personal. There have been many memorable moments for me already along the campaign trail. At times I have sensed how Don Quixote must have felt in his quests. At other times, I have felt like Hercules -- overcoming every obstacle, passing every test. I have received encouragement from numerous wonderful people. Many were kind enough to share some of their precious time, as well as their concerns and thoughts. Some were interested in my thoughts as well. I encourage each and every one of you to learn about the issues facing our great nation, state, county and our city. Learn about the candidates. Take the time to get to know them. Figure out who and what they represent. Tell them about your concerns. Listen to what they have to say. It will be worth it. And it is important. We are in for challenging times. There are some things of which I am certain this year. We will have a new President of these United States. We will have a new school board. We will have a new water board. And we will have a new city council. Who will they be? You the voter get to decide. That is the beauty of two-hundred and thirty-two years of the longest running experiment in democracy and freedom + and still counting! Frank Z. Kertai, Scotts Valley Editor's note: Frank Z.
