What can the county board do specifically to support our schools? With both parents routinely having to work to survive in our current economic climate, it is more important than ever that we support our teachers who can in turn focus their efforts towards student needs. At the county level, offering ROP classes to assist with credit requirements is vital. Also, promoting tutoring programs where local community members can volunteer their time and expertise to help kids that are struggling. The facilities and volunteers and available, the effort needs to be coordinated and promoted. Policies like "No Child Left Behind" may have had good intentions but have forced educators to teach to "pass the test" and not focus developing analytical skills. For standardized testing to work, the tests must be in congruence with the core curriculum. Additionally, students must have incentives to do well on the tests. Funding is the most pressing challenge that faces not just our county, but also the state. Politicians continue to drop the ball on the state level, failing to pass a timely budget. How can a school district create their own budget if they don't even know how much money they are going to receive? We need to start holding these politicians accountable. |
