We need to provide the safest learning environment possible.By Don DietrichCandidate for Board Member; Scotts Valley Unified School District | |

Our schools need to be a place where our children feel safe. We need open interaction with public safety. When I was a Deputy Sheriff patrolling the San Lorenzo Valley, I was on the campuses of the San Lorenzo School District daily. Deputies were invited into the district with open arms. I cannot recall ever being invited into the Scotts Valley district, even though Brook Knoll is in the county jurisdiction, except when there was a problem. Safety is best achieved by prevention. While I see the Scotts Valley Police at the High School, I don't recall seeing deputies at Brook Knoll or the Scotts Valley Police regularly at Vine Hill or the Middle School during my daughter's 8 years in the district. I believe our children should feel comfortable around public safety. Regular visits by public safety at school campuses can establish a comfortable on-going relationship. Additionally, We need to inspect and address safety issues on our campuses on a regular basis. Are non-staff allowed to wander around the campuses? Are there safety hazards that endanger our students? Many times these hazards can be fixed at little or no cost if detected early on. The cost of prevention is always more cost effective than litigation for damages. |
