Smart Voter Political Philosophy for David Riloquio

Candidate for
Board Member; Santa Maria-Bonita School District

This information is provided by the candidate

"It makes sense to have at least school board member with a child currently enrolled in our public school system."

It has been an honor to serve the last 4 years as your board member for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. During my term, as your elected official, you can be proud of the following accomplishments:

  • District solvency
  • Student test scores on the rise. (Last 5 years student standardized test scores up 20%)
  • Completion of school construction.
  • Free After School Safety and Education Program "A.S.E.S." (Implemented at 18 school sites, "A.S.E.S" is a joint partnership with the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, Boys & Girls Club of Santa Maria Valley, and the Santa Maria Valley YMCA. It provides a safe and engaging environment for its students. The program has an academic and physical education focus based upon California academic content standards.)
  • "Volunteer/Community Involvement" noted at the Souza Center barometer.
  • Acknowledgement of "Distinguished Educators" (local, county, state, and federal levels)
  • Recent promotion of a district employee as our next Superintendent.

Increasing class size is the wrong direction for our schools. Eliminating teachers is the wrong direction for our schools. We need to remove these obstacles to student achievement and to teacher performance by working with teachers, parents, and the community to find ways to balance our budget with cuts as far away from the classroom as possible. Classroom cuts should be the last decision not the first.

The Board must ensure that teachers are made a part of the decision making process. Teachers need to be at the table when decisions are made, so that their voice is heard and their suggestions become a part of the decision. We must create an environment that will attract and maintain the most qualified teachers. Our kids deserve the best, and the community should provide nothing less.

Once again, I ask for your vote on November 4th. Together we can make a difference in our public schools!
