Political Philosophy for Dianne McDermott

The Hayward Unified School District has a major issue with declining enrollment. Parents are taking their children out of the district and enrolling them in private schools or transferring them to other districts, or taking more drastic action by moving to another school district. When this occurs, we all lose. If you are a property owner, the value of your home declines because people with children want to move to a school district where test scores are high. They are willing to pay more for a "like" home in another area. A community benefits when the school district is strong and reputable. To resolve this concern, we should be working with parents who have children enrolled in our elementary schools to address their concerns about their child's education. To those who have transferred to another school district, we need to conduct an exit interview and determine "why" and determine if there is a common thread so we have the opportunity to change the trend and take corrective action. |
