Full Biography for Judith Ann "Judy" Myers
Candidate for |

|
Legislator Judy Myers has lived in the Town of Mamaroneck for 25 years. She was elected to her first term as the 7th District's County Legislator in February 2005 to replace George Latimer and was re-elected in November 2005 to a full two-year term. Myers' extensive experience on the Mamaroneck Town Board and her years of work for non-profits led to her being asked to Chair the Board's Family, Health and Human Services Committee in Jan. 06. Judy turned the committee's attention to tackling a wide range of critical issues, from childcare to AIDS to saving the Westchester Medical Center. She also serves on the Environment and Energy Committee, the Legislation Committee, and the Public Works, Transportation, Labor and Parks Committee. Myers was appointed by her fellow Legislators to the Legislative seat on the 13-member Westchester County Board of Health, where she can incorporate the public health concerns and initiatives of the Family, Health and Human Services Committee with those of the Board of Health and the Department of Public Health. In June of this year, Myers was appointed by the Westchester County Executive to the newly formed Flood Action Task Force, charged with developing a comprehensive flood action plan to grant federal, state and county funding to municipal flood mitigation projects. Myers has accomplished a great deal in her first two years in office. She has succeeded in increasing access to quality childcare for Westchester's families through a new scholarship program; she has addressed the need for open space by pushing forward the County's plan to clean up and acquire Davids Island in New Rochelle as a County Park; she has given important input to Rye Playland's new master plan; and she is currently working with the Westchester Children's Museum in their bid for County funding. Myers is a proponent of greater regional planning, intermunicipal cooperation and open government. She has fought to keep taxes under control, even in the face of rising medical and retirement costs, both at the Town and the County level. During her six years on the Mamaroneck Town Council, Myers took on critical land use issues that threatened the Town's quality of life, including preventing the mega-store, Ikea, from destroying residential areas. She worked to develop commercial property design guidelines, placed limits on noisy blasting and rock removal, controlled the over-development of "McMansions" and passed legislation to protect wetlands and watercourses. In addition to serving as the 7th District's County Legislator, Myers serves on a number of community boards, including the United Way of Larchmont and Mamaroneck, the Mamaroneck CAP center, and the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound. She is also an active member of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Summit and RADAR. Judy is married to Ira Schwartz, and has two grown children and a golden retriever puppy. |
