COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENTBy Robert H. "Bob" LevineCandidate for City Councilmember; City of White Plains | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The report prepared by the Mayor's Comprehensive Update Committee in 2006 is a sad commentary on the low esteem in which the populace is held. Largely dependent on City officials for substantive and logistical input, it should be seen for what it is: a deliberate obfuscation of the real issues we face regarding population profiles, density, immigration trends, affordable housing, transportation, traffic and parking, open space, healthcare facilities, school renewal, and a visually and functionally attractive urban core. As things stand now, we wait to respond to the needs of an opportunistic developer, often setting the deal in non-competitive closed discussions with inadequately informed participants. We are not against development per se. We have no agenda about putting a moratorium on development. But we need, foremost, a comprehensive planning framework prepared with objective professional and citizen input with specific project type, location, schedule and costs to follow. We're diddling while the city is being taken from us. We need a new proper Comprehensive Plan to help us get it back now! |
