Vice Mayor Ruth Atkin has served as Emeryville's Mayor, Vice Mayor, and City Councilmember since 1999. Elected on a platform of social justice, Vice Mayor Atkin has championed issues affecting all generations of Emeryville residents - quality education; clean air, traffic reduction, and pedestrian safety; services for families, children and seniors; and a living wage for working families.

Reflecting her advocacy to maintain Emeryville's quality of life, education and neighborhood safety, Vice Mayor Atkin serves on the Boards of Emery Education Foundation, City School Committee, County Transportation and Congestion Management Authorities, and Bicycle - Pedestrian Advisory Committee, among others.

Known as an effective and vocal advocate for Emeryville's interests, Atkin initiated the Climate Protection Task Force locally. As civic leader she has promoted collaboration between the City and the school district - a nationally recognized model - leading the vision for the Emeryville Center for Community Life. Her advocacy on regional transportation boards brings Emeryville's concerns about traffic congestion, reduction, and management to the forefront of responsible transportation planning, a long - term priority of Atkin's.
