Taxpayer Education: A Primary Responsibility

By Betty T. Yee

Candidate for State Board of Equalization; District 1

This information is provided by the candidate
One of the primary responsiblities of public officials is to provide the tools and resources necessary for their constituents to better understand how to comply with laws affecting them.
California's tax laws can intimidating and difficult to understand. As a member of the nation's only elected tax commission, I feel it my duty to convene information for various communities to help them comply with their tax requirements.

Since I assumed the office of Acting Equalization Boardmember in 2004, I have established an extensive taxpayer education program, bringing free information and tools to the small business, non-profit, construction contractor, and women's communities through a number of seminars and conferences as well as through publications and articles in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Additionally, it is important for my constituents to be able to access key contacts to assist them in addressing their tax questions. The State Board of Equalization and its sister tax agencies should not be dreaded by the public, but instead, be regarded as resources that provide high-quality customer service.
