For over 30 years, Cheryl Cox has worked as a teacher, a principal and a school district office administrator, with one goal: to improve teaching and learning in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

Since being elected to the Chula Vista Elementary School District Board of Trustees in 2000, and re-elected to a second term, Cox has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the well-being of students and the school district's employees. The Board oversees a budget of the State's largest K-6 school district. During Cox's tenure on the Board, the school district renovated and rehabilitated the school district's oldest schools.

Cheryl Cox brings to her candidacy for Mayor of Chula Vista the dedication she brought to the school district: "Public service is public trust." Cox believes that Chula Vistans deserve a government that represents the interests of its residents.

"The people elected to local government must not forget why they are in public service. It starts with being accountable for every penny spent. Just as a school board member's responsibility is to manage money so it is spent close to the classroom, a Mayor's responsibility is to make sure that monies are managed so that public safety, libraries and community centers for our City's youth and seniors are assured."

An issue of concern to many is health care. Cox was President and a member of Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center for nine years. She worked on plans to improve and expand hospital outpatient and emergency services, and now sits on the Sharp Healthcare Board and is a member of its Construction Committee.

After becoming a member of the City's Charter Review Commission in 2002, Cox was named to the City's Ad Hoc Committee for Campaign Finance Reform, successfully working to revise and clarify campaign finance regulations that were adopted by the City Council.

Cox was also a charter member of an independent, ten-member Urban Development Committee from 2003-2005, studying how redevelopment can work in a positive and productive ways. The Committee brought their recommended plan to the City Council a year ago.

Cheryl is the daughter of retired Naval Officer, John Willett, Chula Vista's Volunteer-at-Large. Cheryl and her husband of 30 years, County Supervisor Greg Cox, have two daughters, Elizabeth, who works for Rock 'n' Roll marathons and Emmie, a graduate student at Boston University.
