Candidate for Member, Rent Control Board; City of Santa MonicaRent control continues to be a hallmark of Santa Monica. Historically, its existence insured that the community would be accessible, diversified, and stable. Now, vacancy decontrol has resulted not only in higher rents, but higher turnover as tenants move more frequently. The Ellis Act continues to shrink the availability of affordable housing. The challenges are enormous; a fair and impartial Rent Control Board is necessary to meet these challenges. As a former public school teacher and administrator, as a long-time community activist, and as Chairperson of the Commission for the Senior Community, I have developed leadership and negotiating skills which I can bring to the Rent Control Board. Working as a volunteer on the Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights hotline for the past five years has increased my awareness of community concerns. I have lived in Santa Monica for twenty-three years. As a mother and grandmother, I realize how important a healthy community is. To continue to serve this community is my goal. If elected to the Rent Control Board, I will strive to insure the viability of rent control, and will be responsive to the voices of all residents. |
