Shane was born and raised in Humboldt County and has lived Kneeland, Blulelake, and Arcata. Although he is a "home-town" guy he has done a considerable amount of traveling both within the U.S. and other countries. These factors have helped him to be well grounded and open minded regarding a variety of people. In Shane's younger youth he enjoyed and was involved in sports. He was a member of a swim team and a school soccer team. His interests were not limited to sports; since he was very young he has enjoyed music and played both the guitar and cello. He has played music with a variety of musical groups including orchestra, rock band, and folk music. Shane attended elementary school in Arcata and was elected student body president his last year at Sunny Brae Middle School. Shane started high school at Arcata High and then transferred to Laurel Tree, a public charter school. He is now attending College of the Redwoods. Shane is an active member of the community and has a strong "sense of community." He has volunteered for various organizations including: Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County, Humboldt Senior Resource Center, Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee, The Redwood Peace & Justice Center, The Placebo, Food Not Bombs, and as an assistant soccer coach for the Humboldt Youth Soccer League. He has also been involved with organizations outside of Humboldt County. He was part of a ground team working on progressive campaigns in the "battleground state" of Missouri during Election 2004, attended the SEIU (Service Employees' International Union) Youth and Labor Conference in 2004, and was recently a US delegate to the World Festival of Youth and Students in Venezuela, with 15,000 other young people. |
