Political Philosophy for Jonathan Lundell

I believe that universal public education is a responsibility of the entire community. I'm running for school board to make a difference. Let's do a better job with: Small Neighborhood Schools Extensive research supports the principle that small, neighborhood schools are superior to large, centralized schools. Let's also incorporate renewable energy and energy conservation technologies to contribute to the coastside environment and to reduce operating expenses. Active Board Leadership Addressing the disappointing test scores and rankings of our elementary schools demands honest appraisal and focused effort. The school board must lead by insisting on results, recognizing our shortcomings, and not just cheering for our successes. Better Long-Range Planning Recent budget shortfalls have left us with few real choices, in large part because we haven't planned far enough ahead, . The district's Facilities Master Plan, adopted in 1996, is badly flawed, yet the board continues to act as though it were correct. Do the Public's Business in Public Doing school district business in public is a crucial part of establishing trust in our school board. Too much of our school board's business is conducted in secret, behind closed doors. The district's business is the public's business, and it should be conducted in public. We should hold closed meetings only when we have to, not just because a lawyer advises that we can get away with it. |
